Description

Better than worksheets, this lesson workbook walks students step-by-step through using the distributive property and the box method of multiplication. It includes lessons that teach students how to break apart a number into its expanded form, multiply each part separately, and then add the partial products back together.

This is especially helpful for students who have difficulty with the standard algorithm. Instead of constantly switching back and forth between multiplying, carrying, multiplying, adding, carrying, etc., students do all of the multiplying at one time and then all of the addition with minimal carrying.

Even if students are doing well with the standard algorithm, this format helps them see how the distributive property works and gives them a more solid understanding of place value when multiplying multi-digit numbers.

Included:

★ 7 Lessons on Multiplying Numbers Ending with Zeros

★ 3 Lessons on Using the Distributive Property to Multiply

★ 6 Lessons on the Box Method of Multiplication

★ 6 Blank Templates for Using the Box Method

★ Version for Older Students Without Decorative Clip Art

Please download the preview for more details.

✎ Each lesson is presented in model, guided practice, independent practice format.

✎ Step-by-step task analysis is embedded in each sheet.

✎ No prep required.

Students will be able to:

• Multiply numbers ending in zeros

• Solve 1x2, 1x3, and 1x4 digit problems using the distributive property

• Solve 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 2x2, 2x3, and 3x3 digit problems using the box method

Note: This product does NOT include detailed scripted lesson plans—only the short and simple lessons as shown in the preview. Please look at the preview carefully and ask me any questions you have before you buy.

Middle School and High School Special Education Math Teachers:

I needed something for a tier 2 intervention for 5th graders. I printed out all of the pages and bound them with spiral binding. It's a PERFECT resource to get kids really conceptionally understanding why multidigit multiplication works the way it does!

Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
