5.NBT.B.5 - Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
5.NBT.B.7 - Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Materials Included
- Build-a-Problem Spinner
- Blank recording sheets for each level (10 levels available)
- Optional student instruction sheets
Setup
The spinner game boards can be printed on any type of paper, but I prefer construction paper or card stock. Recording sheets should be printed on copy paper and can be reduced in size to print two per page to save paper if desired.
Each student should also get one paper clip per game board to act as the "arrow" for spinning. (Paper clips work much better than trying to attach an actual arrow with a brad).
Playing the Game
This version of Build-a-Problem is designed to reinforce and practice multiplication skills. It is a fun departure from the typical skill and drill type worksheet for students.
I have included instructions for two versions of the game - teamwork mode and competitive mode. Choose the version that best meets the needs of your students.
Multiplication Build-a-Problem Game
- Students can work in pairs or alone
- Students take turns spinning the digit spinner. They should place each digit into the problem grid.
- After students have filled in all of the spaces in the problem, they should compute the multiplication problem.
- If working with a partner, students should check one another for accuracy.
- Students can also check their work using a calculator.
- The recording sheets can be used as an assessment, if desired.
