The advantage to using a rekenrek format when building arrays is that it makes it easier for students to see how a question can be broken into manageable parts. Students can build on their knowledge of multiples of 2 and 5 rather than solely relying on skip counting starting from zero.
The cards can be used as a Math center where students match up the cards that are in the same "family". Each family consists of a rekenrek array, a multiplication question, a division question and 1 or 2 groups statements.
You can also use them as task cards. Students select a card, then determine and record all information related to their card. For example, if they select the card that says "7 groups of 5 & 7 groups of 2" they would draw an array and write the related multiplication and division questions (7 x 7 = 49 and 49/7 = 7).
Have students use a Math Mat to organize their thinking. To view a Math Mat click the link below.
All facts from 2x2 to 10x10 are included on the file.
Cards can easily be printed as black and white.
