Description

The advantage to using a rekenrek format when building arrays is that it makes it easier for students to see how a question can be broken into manageable parts. Students can build on their knowledge of multiples of 2 and 5 rather than solely relying on skip counting starting from zero.

The cards can be used as a Math center where students match up the cards that are in the same "family". Each family consists of a rekenrek array, a multiplication question, a division question and 1 or 2 groups statements.

You can also use them as task cards. Students select a card, then determine and record all information related to their card. For example, if they select the card that says "7 groups of 5 & 7 groups of 2" they would draw an array and write the related multiplication and division questions (7 x 7 = 49 and 49/7 = 7).

Create a memory game with the specific facts you want students to practice.

You could have students use a Math Mat (Not included in this Rekenrek product) to organize their thinking. To view a Math Mat for multiplication, click the link below.

There are so many ways to use the cards!

All facts from 2x2 to 10x10 are included on the file.

Cards can easily be printed as black and white.

Awesome!!! This is just what I needed to help my older students understand how to use the rekenrek for multiplication and division. The cards are well-designed and they can be used for multiple games after the lesson(s). I really appreciated the how-to video, too. Thank you!

I'm glad to hear you are as excited as I am to use the rekenrek as a teaching tool for multiplication and division. Feel free to add any successful lesson/activity ideas as a comment. I know there are so many ways I haven't thought of yet to use the cards. Thank you for your purchase and happy playing!

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
