In the case of math facts, it's important to store facts in long term memory since much of math is based on the basic math facts. Once students know their basic facts, learning higher math concepts and solving more complicated math problems becomes easier. Students no longer need to count on their fingers or use counters to solve math problems; they just know the answer and can continue on working through any given math concept.
