Description
You can use these cards when teaching static and dynamic multiplication with the Montessori Golden Beads or other math manipulatives. Each place value is color-coded just the same as the small or large number cards. The cards can be made double-sided with the answer printed on the back, or printed separately. Blank templates are included for student copywork. The solid yellow-lined cards indicate a static equation without regrouping, while the double lined cards indicate dynamic multiplication, so it is easy to tell at a glance which type of equation you have.
How and When to Use These Cards
Before you provide these cards for use, ensure your students have had plenty of preliminary practice with the golden bead material, large number cards and addition operations. In Montessori we introduce multiplication after addition, since multiplication is simply repeated addition.
Ideally, these cards are to be used after a student has had initial presentations in static and dynamic multiplication - with direct teacher guidance and no cards. Introduce cards only when you feel the student is ready for totally independent work. Alternatively, teachers can use these cards to come up with equations to provide students "on the fly" as it can sometimes be tricky to think of one on the spot! This product is appropriate for 5-6 year old children, however, in the Montessori approach we always follow the child and observe for readiness, no matter the child's age.
Why Teach Static and Dynamic Multiplication with Golden Beads
The golden beads are a wonderful math manipulative that provide children with a concrete experience of quantity before they are ready to move on to abstract concepts. When teaching multiplication, we teach static multiplication (without exchanging/regrouping) first to ensure children understand the steps involved with the golden beads and number cards.
The concept of exchanging should have been practiced previously with dynamic addition, however, it will be solidified further when practicing dynamic multiplication with the golden beads.
Having plenty of practice will make the next steps of abstraction with the Stamp Game and Dot game much easier for children to understand.
Product Preparation
If you want to print these cards double-sided I recommend testing your printing configurations first to ensure they print in the correct direction.
