Description

Multiplying Decimals using Area Models gives students hands-on practice with decimal multiplication while helping them strengthen place value and number sense. Colorful pictorial task cards and an engaging I Have/Who Has game let students actively explore decimals, while providing teachers with ready-to-use activities for whole-group, small-group, or workstation use.

Why it matters
Multiplying decimals can feel abstract, but area models make the process visual and concrete. Students see how decimals interact and connect the models to multiplication expressions, building a stronger understanding of place value and decimal relationships.

How it helps
This resource turns a tricky concept into meaningful, active practice. Students engage with task cards, grid paper, and the game to explore decimal multiplication, reinforcing skills in a hands-on, low-prep way.

Ways to use

  • Whole-group guided practice
  • Small-group math intervention
  • Independent workstations or centers
  • Partner or class review with the game

What’s included

  • 30 “I Have/Who Has?” cards using area models for tenths × tenths (products to hundredths)
  • 42 task cards (21 with area model visuals + 21 with matching multiplication expressions)
  • Decimal grid paper for students to draw their own area models
  • 4 digital files for use with Google Slides™

This versatile resource makes decimal multiplication approachable, engaging, and hands-on, helping students master both the why and how behind the concept.

Low prep, engaging, repeated practice, conceptual, many possible uses. My students were getting tired of (and lazy with) drawing models to represent decimal multiplication, but still needed more practice with the skill. These cards were the perfect solution! I pre-cut a set of cards for each group/partnership of students and tasked them with matching each model to its corresponding expression. This was more challenging for them than I was expecting! With teamwork, almost all students were successful eventually though! And it encouraged a lot of great mathematical discussion between students :)
