Description

Introduce multiplication of fractions using area models, scaling, and equivalent expressions with this interactive notebook set aligned to 5th math Common Core and 6th math TEKS. Use these materials to introduce reading and creating area models, the idea of fractions as a division expression, and multiplication as scaling (whether multiplication will cause the product to be great or less than the initial value with and without computation). Also included are 4 problem solving questions, a practice activity, and a writing activity. There is also a 5 question, test prep style formative assessment to use with your students.

Use your lesson time wisely with this low prep notebook activity. All pieces are designed to fit neatly into your students' interactive notebooks and are jam-packed with info to minimize copying, cutting, folding, and gluing so that you can make the most of your prep and instructional time. Check out the preview to see everything that is included!

  • Multiplying Fractions Mini-book
  • 4 Problem Solving Questions
  • 2 Practice Activities
  • 5-question Quiz
  • A Google Slides digital notebook version for online learning!

These notebook materials require minimal cutting and pasting, but maximum learning! I love using interactive notebook activities with my students, but many of the engaging activities for the notebook involved so much cutting and gluing. Especially for some students with less than fantastic cutting and folding skills, getting the notebook activity ready could take longer than the actual instruction! I wanted something academically relevant and rigorous but easy to cut, fold, and glue. That is what inspired this series…Interactive Mini Books!

Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (𝘢/𝘣 = 𝘢 ÷ 𝘣). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. For example, interpret 3/4 as the result of dividing 3 by 4, noting that 3/4 multiplied by 4 equals 3, and that when 3 wholes are shared equally among 4 people each person has a share of size 3/4. If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Interpret the product (𝘢/𝘣) × 𝘲 as a parts of a partition of 𝘲 into 𝘣 equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations 𝘢 × 𝘲 ÷ 𝘣. For example, use a visual fraction model to show (2/3) × 4 = 8/3, and create a story context for this equation. Do the same with (2/3) × (4/5) = 8/15. (In general, (𝘢/𝘣) × (𝘤/𝘥) = 𝘢𝘤/𝘣𝘥.)
