Multiplying Rational Numbers Guided Cornell Notes
Share

Description

Teaching students how to multiply rational numbers is more than just memorizing what the product will be but understanding why it works out that way. By using a visual method, students will VISUALIZE working with the repeated addition to find the product of a multiplication equation. Throughout these Guided Cornell Style Notes, you will teach your lesson to build a visual reference for students to look back on as they create a textbook of their own.

After completing the Guided Cornell Notes, students are given plenty of practice to use the skills that they have learned. This is then backed up with an Exit Ticket to complete the lesson as well as further practice in the form of a Practice Sheet that can also be used for homework or even a future quiz.

With the needs of learning constantly changing, each of these items has also been provided for Google Drive. The Cornell Notes are imposed into Google Slides where students will use textboxes or drawing tools to complete the notes to save within their own Google Drive. The Exit Ticket and Practice Sheet are provided via Google Forms. This format allows students to easily submit their work to the teacher.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, particularly the distributive property, leading to products such as (–1)(–1) = 1 and the rules for multiplying signed numbers. Interpret products of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Understand that integers can be divided, provided that the divisor is not zero, and every quotient of integers (with non-zero divisor) is a rational number. If 𝘱 and 𝘲 are integers, then –(𝘱/𝘲) = (–𝘱)/𝘲 = 𝘱/(–𝘲). Interpret quotients of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
