ThoughtFLOW Learning’s lesson, Descriptive Writing Bunch, contains interactive class-led and individual exercises focusing on descriptive writing as a skill. ThoughtFLOW Learning’s Descriptive Writing Bunch utilizes a detail-oriented, skills-based approach to help students strategically understand how to write with vivid details and descriptions. 

Implementation in the Classroom

The Descriptive Writing Bunch could be used as an introduction to descriptive writing as a skills-based focus, or it could also be used as a supplementary lesson for teaching narrative writing to upper elementary or middle school grade levels. There are digital and hardcopy versions of guided notes and worksheets for students.

Descriptive Writing Lesson

This is a 20-slide lesson that introduces students to four methods of descriptive writing. Through visuals, guided notes, guided practice, examples, and non-examples, this lesson contains various supports to cater to different teaching styles and students’ learning needs. Modeling and class-led instruction helps students better conceptualize and understand the depth involved in meaningful, purpose-driven description.

Descriptive Writing - Visual Prompt (Hardcopy & Digital)

This worksheet assesses students’ ability to write descriptively based on a visual prompt. This worksheet assesses students’ ability to produce descriptive writing using visual inspiration as a support.

Descriptive Writing - Written Prompt (Hardcopy & Digital)

This worksheet assesses students’ ability to write descriptively based on various written prompts. This worksheet assesses students’ ability to produce descriptive writing using a setting of their choice. It challenges students to make their imagination and visualization come to fruition in their writing.

Descriptive Writing - Class Activity (Hardcopy & Digital)

This class activity has students think about descriptive writing from a reader’s and writer’s perspective; this challenges students to apply their understanding of descriptive details and strategically produce descriptive writing. Students use descriptive details to write about a “secret” place while listeners guess the secret place. Specific directions and instructions are included to guide the teacher and students.

Descriptive Writing - Revise & Edit (Hardcopy & Digital)

Based on a non-example of writing, students will apply their understanding of the various methods used to produce a thoughtful, descriptive version of writing. This demonstrates the importance of revision and editing in the descriptive writing process.
