Hello music teachers!
I love centre activities. And I'm always developing new ways to make them thoughtful, fun, and engaging. Here is one based on the classic card game 'Go Fish'.
Go Fish is a classic card game usually played by 2-6 players, using a standard 52-card deck. The objective is to collect the most four-of-a-kind sets (four cards of the same rank) by asking other players for specific cards. In this case, we will be using note cards.
Here's how to play:
1. Shuffle the deck and deal each player 5 cards (or 7 cards if there are only 2 players).
2. Place the remaining cards face down in the center of the table as the draw pile.
3. Players look at their cards but keep them hidden from others.
4. The player to the left of the dealer starts the game, and play proceeds clockwise.
5. During a turn, the player asks any other player for a specific note (e.g., "Do you have any C's?"). The player must already have at least one card of that note.
**The player must differentiate the octaves by saying "space-note C" or
"ledger line note C"; "line-note E" or "space-note E" etc.
6. If the asked player has any cards of that note, they must give all of them to the asking player. The asking player can then ask again.
7. If the asked player doesn't have any cards of that rank, they say "Go Hunt," and the asking player draws a card from the draw pile. If the drawn card is the rank they asked for, they show it to the other players and take another turn.
8. When a player collects four cards of the same note, they place the set face-up on the table.
9. The game continues until all sets are completed, or there are no more cards left in the draw pile.
10. The player with the most sets wins the game.
Enjoy!
