Description

Cure student boredom with this Generating and Analyzing Number Patterns Math Quest! Allow students to master or practice their number patterns skills and eliminate clues to reverse the “Spell of Westham Mystique.” In the end, students will determine a four-digit code. If you want, you can set the activity up as an escape room or breakout.

Students are invited to Wizardry School but must pass the final sorcerer test! This math quest has students solving 20 math problems (task-cards) related to Common Core Standard 4.OA.A.5 (Students will be able to generate a number pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself.)

Your students will ENJOY every minute of generating and analyzing number patterns practice and review! This engaging math activity gets your students up and moving while focusing on math standards with a twist of FUN! Students WILL need scratch paper to work out each problem and/or show their work.

Students will work individually (or in pairs) and race to see who can reverse the spell first! A friendly competition always increases engagement.

Super low prep! The only thing you need to do is cut and hide/hang the task cards!

Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
