Description

Rekenreks are a great visual tool for building number sense and practicing addition and subtraction strategies! If you do not currently use them, I highly recommend that you check them out!

Rekenreks are strings of ten beads, with each string having 5 red beads followed by 5 white beads. They help kids see numbers 5 and 10 as "anchor numbers" when composing and decomposing numbers. For example, when adding 8+6, kids can see 8 as "5 and 3 more" and 6 as "5 and 1 more". Because both sets of 5 are red, it's easy to see that you can make a ten. 10 red beads + 4 white beads = 14.

This file contains picture cards for various strategies on the Rekenrek. It also contains numeral or equation cards for each strategy that can be used to create matching or "memory" centers.

Strategies included:

- Making 10

- Doubles

- Near Doubles

- Numbers 1-20 (standard formations)

- Adding 0

- Adding 1

- Counting Up

I love the first page with verbal activity examples for use with the rekenrek. The rest of the resource is just pictures of all 2-row rekenrek possibilities ... somewhat helpful, but not as beneficial as other rekenrek resources.

Hi Jennifer, I'm glad you found the activity examples helpful. However, I am disappointed to receive a low rating when the example pictures and preview clearly show what is included. I hope you were still able to make use of this resource and that your students enjoyed it. :) - Katy

The students love the rehkenrek and I needed something to help jumpstart my explanation on how to use them. This was exactly what I needed.
