Rekenreks are a great visual tool for building number sense and practicing addition and subtraction strategies! If you do not currently use them, I highly recommend that you check them out! Rekenreks are strings of ten beads, with each string having 5 red beads followed by 5 white beads. They help kids see numbers 5 and 10 as "anchor numbers" when composing and decomposing numbers. For example, when adding 8+6, kids can see 8 as "5 and 3 more" and 6 as "5 and 1 more". Because both sets of 5

Analyzing and interpreting data can be a big task for first graders! I've found that my kiddos need LOTS of practice in order to be proficient with this standard. This file contains 2 graphs ("Coolest Robot" and "Favorite Zoo Animal") with 3 differentiated versions of each. There are easier "Who has the most/least" questions, more complex "How many more/less" questions, and a version that includes a spinner for kids to create their own data and ask their own question.

I LOVE teaching first graders! They love to learn and have fun, and their progress from September to June is HUGE! It always amazes me how far they come!
Teaching style
I believe in the value of kids talking and working through problems together. I love Common Core's focus on showing perseverance in solving problems and also on explaining the thinking behind a solution. I think that kids are the most engaged when they are "doing", so there's a lot of hands-on practice in my room. Looking for quality hands-on activities was actually how I discovered TPT, and I am so glad I did!
