Description

A comprehensive, low prep, standards-based bundle of 5th grade number talks resources is here. This number sense building bundle includes tools for implementing number talks in your classroom with ease and confidence. Our Grab and Go Number Talks include high quality prompts that vary from skill to skill!

THE WHY…

When students reason mentally about numbers and try to solve problems without their pencils and paper, the magic starts to happen. In my classroom and many others, we call these lessons number talks. Number talks are the best way to build the computational fact fluency we are after.

Students solve the prompts mentally using number sense strategies. These short talks create excitement in your class as students practice making arguments to support their thinking and build off of the ideas of other students in the room.

Finding the time in your math block to provide students with number sense building opportunities is difficult. This bundle of number talks prompts for 5th grade saves you time! No more searching for the right prompts to ask and patching them together.

What are Grab and Go Number Talk Prompts?

Number talk prompts are class prompts and questions to promote computational fluency and number sense. Number talks should last 5-10 minutes and discussion and collaboration are encouraged. Students are allowed to use pencil and paper to keep track of their steps as they complete their mental calculations.

What is included in this bundle?

  • 180 Number Talk Prompts: The questions are specifically designed to promote number sense and geared towards using the different number strategies. There is a variety of different questions for you to choose from! All prompts are aligned to the grade level’s curriculum so spiral review is also embedded in this resource. All prompts are available in print and digital form!!

  • Mental Math Strategies Posters: Posters are provided outlining the different number sense strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Hand Signal Posters: Hang these posters in your classroom to keep the pace of your number talk lesson!

  • Sentence Stems: Give these sentence starters to your students to help promote peer discussion during your number talks!

  • Teacher Checklist: A teacher friendly checklist is included for you to keep track of the questions you use throughout the year.

This is a great tool for transition work or morning work. It doesn't really help with our required number talks though. There aren't really any number strings and the slides don't build on each other.

Great value
While it took some getting used to for students to talk out their mathematical thinking, students have been more willing to take risks and try and think about their problems in different ways when we discuss the possible routes you can take as a class.
