Helpful tips:
- use the non-dominate hand for pounding and tapping, then student can pound and tap as needed while writing the word.
- start with the left most finger and tap to the right (start with green and end on red) -- we read left to right, so we tap left to right
- only give the student the hand they need, not both
Steps:
- dictate the word
- pound the word
- if the word has more than one syllable, pound all syllables, then pound just the first syllable
- tap the sounds in the word -- we tap left to right because we read left to right
- pound the word again
- focus on each sound to spell the sound
example:
- Teacher: chip
- (pound fist) and say word chip
- start on the left most finger ch - i - p
- (pound fist) chip
- I heard the sound /ch/ how do we spell that sound?

My students loved this resource! It was very engaging for them.
I liked how the hands are colorful and the words "pound it" are on each hand. It was just what I was looking for to use with my littles during word and sentence dictation.
