Description

Are you looking for challenging, real-world, open-ended math problems that keep your students engaged, apply the math you have taught, and meet the standards of the Common Core or other rigorous math standards--including the Standards for Mathematical Practice?

This FREE resource is for you!

This open-ended challenge can be used in a number of ways…as whole class explorations, as small group challenges, or as independent work for those students needed something more. In fact, the digital option even lets you send it remotely for an "at home" challenge!

In my classroom, I often use these open-ended challenges as whole-class explorations where students work in teams, share ideas, guess and check their ideas—and then present their solutions. The problem solving and math applications are high level and meaningful. See what you think!

This particular FREE challenge asks students to study some data about a paper airplane throwing competition--and to help reorganize the teams to be more balanced. The task has multiple entry points. Students can use their reasoning and estimating skills (at a more basic level) or could actually calculate averages (all numbers work out evenly without needing decimals or fractions).

Students are then given other challenge questions to tackle with respect to the airplane data. This task is perfect for really digging into those Standards for Mathematical Practice...they need to make sense of the problem, persevere, look for patterns, and much more!

Because there are many solutions, no answers are able to be included--although when needed, teaching tips are added. Problem solving is really about the PROCESS!

Appropriate for grades 3-5—depending on skill level and level of support offered. You can be very detailed and step-by-step with directions or provide students with a true "make sense of the problem" situation where they dig in on their own. Teaching tips are included.

Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
