Description

Outside In by Deborah Underwood and illustrated by Cindy Derby is a Caldecott Honor Book. It is not hard to see why. Use this book unit to teach your students the power of words, new vocabulary, the importance of being outside and how things outside help us to live better inside.

With simplistic words that take you on a journey and detailed, rich water-color paintings, this book mesmerizes you with what is going on outside - and NOT going on outside. Outside is depicted as almost human yet not human at all!

Big Ideas:

Outside is a force that reminds us it is there to enjoy and not take for granted.

Sometimes the most profound things are small and move ever so slowly.

The outside reminds us to pay attention to our 5 senses. It is a gift to be grateful for as it feeds us and keeps us warm or cool.

Use this book unit to:

  • teach new vocabulary
  • use as a read aloud and discussion book
  • create anchor charts on "things to do outside" and "My 5 Senses" (images for 5 senses provided)
  • compare and contrast
  • create a list
  • complete a book review
  • link to other curricular areas: Science (plants and animals, shadows, water) Social Studies (Indigenous perspectives on the land, gratitude for nature)
