Ten Frames can be used as a tool to help students identify strategies and help strengthen number sense while learning how to structure to ten. These ten frames show different ways to represent numbers and many combinations of numbers.
Ideas for Use:
- Choose a focus (ex: identifying total amount, double facts, combinations of 10, 9, 8, 7, or 6, or identifying how many more needed to make 10). Flash students the Ten Frame and pose questions, example: “How many did you see? How many more to Make ten? How did you see ten? What combination does this card show?
- Post around room to show representation of numerals 0-10.
- Give students cards and have them create a word problem that matches the combination shown on the card and identify the matching equation.
