Description

PURPOSE:

This activity requires students to look at shaded portions of circles to figure out what percent is shaded – but no guessing. Using a ruler they will have to figure out what fraction of the whole is shaded and then convert that fraction to a percent. It will require patience and accuracy to make a proper estimate.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

This product contains:

✏️ A detailed guide with multiple best practices for teaching this resource

✏️ A 1-page printable activity

✏️ A 1-page complete answer key

✏️ An assignable Easel activity

STORY:

I really liked a lot of the “shaded region” problems in our textbook but those mostly were used for area and perimeter problems. This project requires some creativity and it is interesting to see who will excel at problem solving with these unique problems.

POSSIBLE EXTENSIONS:

Possible extensions are included in this file!

MATERIALS/PRE-REQS:

Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
