Description

Do you need an engaging way for your students to practice polynomial operations? This coded drawing formative assessment activity is going to be the perfect fit with its insightful look at student progress with adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomial expressions.

My students have loved doing these "Build-a-Creature" activities in my classroom. They love the mystery of figuring out what their creature is going to look like, while also figuring out how they can find "loop holes" in the code to come up with the most creative drawing. I've always given out small prizes to my favorite drawings. The best part about this activity is my students had no idea how much math they were really doing AND they had no idea how much of my own observations I was doing.

Even though I'm a math teacher, sometimes it is easier to spot patterns from visual representations - not numbers (That's what we teach our students, right?)

This visual formative assessment tool will be a game-changer in your classroom!

This activity comes with a complete and comprehensive answer key that will also serve as a diagnostic and decode what skills and misconceptions your students may be struggling with. And the best part, this activity is so easy to use, you can leave it with a substitute and you and your students will both get so much out of it!

My students were engaged. Problem #9 had an issue where the answer is not given (wrong sign in front of the x^2 term). Other than that, it had a good mixture of adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomials. I used it with honors kids as a quick review of those topics.

I'm so happy to hear that your students were engaged and that this activity worked as a quick review! And I'm so sorry about that mistake in the activity. I just updated the file and it can be redownloaded with the correction. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review and point out that error. I appreciate you Karri!
