Description

Design a ski resort with this 6th-grade positive and negative integers math project. Students will apply their understanding of rational numbers in word problems related to their ski resort. They will solve absolute value word problems and find distances on a four-quadrant coordinate plane. Additionally, they will use persuasive language to advertise for their ski resort and integrate creative ideas into their projects. This resource is great for 6th-grade teachers who want to engage early finishers, challenge gifted and talented students independently, or complete a whole-class project at the end of a math unit about the number system.

What’s Included in This Math Enrichment Project?

✏️ PDF & Google Slides Link

  • Part 1: Real-World Integers
  • Part 2: Number Lines and Coordinate Planes
  • Part 3: Rational Numbers and Absolute Value
  • Part 4: Distance on the Coordinate Plane
  • Part 5: Positive and Negative Values
  • Advertisement: Write or Film a Commercial
  • Answer Keys + Examples

Each section includes:

✅ Practice Pages – Reinforce the number system (specifically integers and rational numbers) through scaffolded instruction. Students can review the example strategy at the top of the page and solve increasingly difficult problems as they work with number lines and coordinate planes.

✅ Apply Pages – Solve absolute value word problems about real-world ski resort scenarios. Students will show their understanding of the number system.

✅ Create Pages – Students feature special amenities in their ski resort and draw a map on a four-quadrant coordinate plane. They practice adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers to create a profit and loss statement. They make decisions and solve math problems using their unique set of numbers.

  • Advertisement Project - Students can write, record, or perform a resort commercial.

This Independent Math Project is Perfect for:
✔️ Whole-class instruction (assign at the end of your Number System unit).
✔️ Small groups or intervention (reinforce students' understanding of rational numbers, absolute value, and distances on coordinate planes).
✔️ Gifted students or early finishers (let them complete the full project at their own pace!).

⭐️ “My students were so engaged in this project! They loved the real-world connections and having the freedom to design their ski resort while practicing math with integers.”

⭐️ “This resource is designed with students in mind. The examples help them practice skills before applying them to their own ski resort design. It’s a fabulous format!"

⭐️ “The digital slides are beautifully designed and easy to use. I didn't have to print a single page. Students completed this project over the course of a month whenever they finished math work early."

⭐️ “I used this as an end-of-unit enrichment activity, and it was a hit! The scaffolded practice helped build confidence, and the ‘Create’ pages allowed for student choice.”

⭐️ “This was the perfect challenge for my gifted students! They worked through each part independently and had so much fun applying math in a meaningful way.”

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., 𝘹-axis and 𝘹-coordinate, 𝘺-axis and 𝘺-coordinate).
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
