Pre Primer / Primer Sentence Building (Basic)
Share

Description

Suggested use: Sentences for this activity were created using a combination of Pre-Primer/Primer sight words, along with CVC words, and a few words pulled from other word lists. This activity consists of 50 sentences with 10 sets, containing 5 sentences in each set. You have been provided with a list of the sentences, for each set. Also, you will have the individual words for each sentence in the sets. Each sentence in the set will be a different color. Sentences have been randomly mixed among other sentence sets when typed to ensure that no two sentences are the same color in a given set. To prepare each set, you will need to use a variety of colored cardstock when printing. After all sentences have been copied and laminated, cut them apart. Sort them into sets before cutting out the individual words for each sentence. Finally, after all sentences for the set are complete, place them in snack sized baggies. Label them using a permanent marker (example: Pre-Primer/Primer Set 1, etc.). Next, place all sets in a larger quart sized bag and label (example: Sentence Building Pre-Primer/Primer Basic Sets 1-10). When students begin constructing their sentences, they must first sort the colored word pieces for each sentence. It is recommended that when students are working with the sentence sets, that they construct them inside a flat metal pan to help prevent loss of pieces. After sentence pieces have been sorted, have students identify their sentence beginning, which will be capitalized, and the sentence ending, which will include an end mark, or punctuation mark. Then, like working a puzzle, let students use random trial and error to figure out the correct order of the sentences. Some sentences may have more than one possible solution. Some students may need extra support or guidance while constructing sentences. The sentence sets may be constructed by individual students, or in small groups. Another option when using the sentence sets is to let the students compete constructing the sentences in a given amount of time.
