With visually engaging animations and an easy-to-follow structure, the lesson begins with a clear objective and an essential question to guide learning and focus students on the key takeaways. These interactive slides and notes template are perfect for whole-class instruction, small-group work, or independent learning! View the video lesson.

In this math video lesson we will learn 3 easy steps to determine probability and describe likelihood. We will define probability and understand that it represents a number between 0 and 1 written as a ratio of the desired outcomes to the total outcomes. We will understand that probability can be represented as a fraction, decimal or percent. We will consider events such as rolling a number cube (die), spinning a spinner and selecting a marble from a jar of marbles. We will learn 3 simple steps to write the ratio. We will also learn how to describe probability as a likelihood on a scale. We will learn that 0 describes an impossible outcome and 1 represents an outcome that is certain. We will represent 25% or 1/4 as unlikely, 50% or 1/2 as equally likely, and 75% or 3/4 as likely. We will find probabilities of events and determine their likelihoods. Student practice is embedded in the lesson with exemplar solutions that are modeled and explained.

Understand that the probability of a chance event is a number between 0 and 1 that expresses the likelihood of the event occurring. Larger numbers indicate greater likelihood. A probability near 0 indicates an unlikely event, a probability around 1/2 indicates an event that is neither unlikely nor likely, and a probability near 1 indicates a likely event.
