The focus of this lesson sequence looks to problem solving for students of all abilities. It considers the noise associated with problem solving and the various frameworks and strategies that could be in use. This lesson sequence considers:

  • Newman’s Analysis
  • Polya’s problem solving prompts
  • CUBES: circle, underline, box, eliminate/evaluate, solve
  • RUCSAC: read, understand, choose, solve, answer, check
  • Mathematical Habits of Mind
  • Problem Solving Strategies

This lesson sequence aims to streamline the approach and support students to work mathematically. 

This resource is best used in line with the Problem Solving Trio: activity, teacher slides and lesson sequence.
