Kick off the year with engaging Back to School Project-Based Learning!

This creative Lunchbox Math project helps build classroom community while challenging students with real-world problem solving.

Perfect for upper elementary and middle school to start the year with teamwork, critical thinking, and fun.

Students will use reading comprehension, creative thinking, and math skills to design a new lunchbox prototype.

Perfect for back-to-school season or for building classroom cohesion at the start of a new school year!

Go to new depths of learning with this Project-Based Learning activity. This differentiated resource uses elements of the Design Process as well as Depth and Complexity, so that students can further enhance learning with:

  • Activity 1a, 1b and 1c | ASK | Read |” The History of Lunchboxes” “Design Elements of a Lunchbox” and “Unlocking Creative Thinking: Let’s Get Those Creative Juices Flowing!”
  • Activity 2 | IMAGINE | Brainstorm About Your Lunchbox
  • Activity 3 | RESEARCH and PLAN | Choosing Design and Marketing Strategies
  • Activity 4 |APPLY| Solve 5 Real-life Word Problems Using Multiplication and Division
  • Activity 5 | CREATE | What Are the Details? Design a New Lunchbox Prototype
  • Activity 6 |IMPROVE | Request Constructive Feedback from a PEER Inspector
  • FINAL Activity | Crack the Code | Complete a Multiple-Choice Quiz and Crack the Pigpen Cipher Code to Earn an Exit Ticket Code

1.5 Hour Activity (Can be taught all at once or separately)

Let students work at their own pace, in centers, for homework or as a whole group. This is an engaging & flexible unit!

The following materials are needed to complete all activities:

Printouts

Pencils

Colored pencils or markers

Scissors

Colorful 12x18 construction paper (1 per student, light colors work best)

Colorful scrap paper

Glue

This activity is suggested for grades 4-6

Perfect for early finishers or high achievers, this project fosters critical thinking and decision-making skills.


This resource is perfect for sub plans, Language Arts centers, group work, independent work, or early finishers.
