Description

This card activity allows students practice in setting up proportions using information given in a word problem. There are five proportions for each word problem, however, one of the proportions is incorrect. When put into groups during this activity, students will definitely engage in good conversation about setting up proportions and identifying when a proportion is set up incorrectly.

In this activity:

Students practice setting up proportions for real world word problems.

Identify which out of five proportions given are set up correctly.

Determine which proportion out of five given is incorrect.

This is an awesome group activity that will engage students in great discussion about how proportions are set up.

Directions:

Print the number of sets needed and cut out cards.

Each word problem has four correct proportions. There is one proportion that is set up incorrectly. Students are to set up a proportion for the word problem and find the four equivalent proportions and identify the incorrect proportion.

When students are done, there will be five proportions that will not belong to any sets. These will be the incorrect proportions.

My students enjoyed this activity as it gave them a way to practice setting up and solving proportions and being able to check themselves as they went. In addition, they worked in groups/pairs so they enjoyed that too.
