Description

This practical, real-world activity has students identify a problem or issue and come up with a solution. Based on real-world proposal writing, this activity includes problem-solution writing, persuasive writing, and research writing. Includes both a standard proposal and a Short Form proposal, with rubrics. Also includes a Planning worksheet, Basics of Proposal Writing Handout and a Sample Proposal. Practice writing outside the essay format, and engage students in skills they will need in the real-world!

Proposal writing is a common real-world activity in many settings: governments accept proposals for projects, business write and accept proposals to offer goods and services (including design, building, creating, and more), scholars write proposals for research projects (such as zoos, science labs, and more), and nonfiction authors write proposals to publishers for a book idea.

Proposal writing is not quite like essay writing. There may be a short introduction, or the proposal may jump right to the problem to be addressed. The proposal is divided into sections with headers to divide and label. Short Form proposals are usually a page or less. Standard proposals may be multiple pages, and may include a Works Cited page for research citations.

My students who could not keep up with the class lesson loved this short blurb of what they were learning, which was easy for them to comprehend and complete within the class period.
