October will be here before you know it and one of my favorite October activities is Pumpkin Math!
This mini unit integrates reading, writing, math and science to learn about pumpkins and also includes some other fun ideas. This will grab your students attention and before you know it, they will be writing, graphing and learning facts and creating opinions about pumpkins!
There are many fun books to use when learning about pumpkins and gathering facts to support this resource. One of my favorites is : Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie (Picture the Seasons) Paperback – July 28, 2009 by Jill Esbaum (Author)
You can also use this resource and have small groups read various leveled books about Pumpkins and come up with their own Pumpkins can have and are ideas or you can read the story to the class and have them jot down their ideas as you read or after a 3 minute reading, then pause and have children write their facts.
And Scholastic News always has a magazine that deals with pumpkins. So, however you do decide to get extra facts to support his unit is up to you!

★ Pumpkins Can, Have, Are fact sheet to take notes about pumpkins. One in color if you want to use it as a chart on your Smart board another black and white for individual use.
★ Pumpkin fact and opinion ideas written on pumpkins and some blank pumpkins for you to add your own ideas.
★ A Fact and Opinion Graphic Organizer to sort facts and opinions about pumpkins Color and black and white.
★ Pumpkin Math ideas and instructions for a fun adult structured cooperative math learning activity with pictures and ideas to enrich this activity.
★ Writing frame to write about your pumpkin and a blank writing sheet for those who can take off independently Black and white and color.
★ How to Carve a Pumpkin 'How to" writing frame.
★ A Pumpkin Jack-o-Lantern Glyph.
★ Pumpkin math fact families from 0-10 and sheet to demonstrate what you know about math facts and some blank pumpkins to add your own number or ideas.
★ Pumpkin Graph activity to support math facts and reading graphs.
A tried and true activity that my kiddos loved every year for the past 20+ years supported by their enthusiasm every time we did it!
