Description
The World Championship of Code - I wanted to create a sense of competition in the class and my older students helped me choose a suitable ridiculous / fun name.
Please download the demo file and visit the link here to view the demo teacher area or here to see a task the student would undertake. The answer is in the demo booklet, but this is to show how it works.
TEACHER GUIDE
If you are reading this, thank you very much – I have had a lot of feedback on this unit of work and I am continually updating it by adding more challenges to it.
This project is aimed at my Year 11 (Grade 10 US) students. However, I also use it to differentiate my lessons, as many of my talented Year 9 students (Grade 8) also have completed all of the lessons – some were as an extracurricular club
More recently – this has been excellent for E-Learning / Distance Learning / Home Learing to support students at home during covid. Some students worked in groups via teams to solve the problems
Teaching Approaches
I have used this to support students via e-learning, some working on their own, others working in teams.
It was a great Python Advanced club for younger students.
In class, we work in teams with three students. Each time students successfully complete a task, they switch lead coder so that all students are having an opportunity to problem solve
I try to cap the number of activities that I will allow students to complete in a given lesson - so I differentiate with them to get them to create support resources, or go around and support the other students in class. My College has a great house points system, so these students achieve regular extra points for completing work and then supporting their class mates learning. More recently, they have been making 'How To' videos which we have been using to share with weaker coders so that they can understand the logic and thinking of their class mates. These are often a very useful tool, as students can explain things better/different to their peers of the same age.
***UPDATE:
I have updated the online tasks to around 50 independent activities. I will be regularly updating the files and will notify you when other downloads are available.
If you need help with this, I am happy to support with a short video call to help you set it up, should their be any issues.
