Python Turtle is a great way to introduce students to coding. The language is easy to learn with most commands having easy to understand English wording. The unit level is suitable for Grade 6 to 10.
This is a comprehensive unit (5 – 8 weeks) to teach learners how to use Python Turtle using easy and accessible online software. There is an instructional teacher slideshow to explain how to use Python Turtle with introductory activities, a comprehensive student activity booklet with graded tasks, a sample student portfolio and 3 digital coding puzzles and all activities and puzzles have solutions.
Skills learnt from this unit would enable the learner to start gaining programming knowhow and lay the base for future coding with Python. It is also suitable for students who have some experience with early coding and need to consolidate or revise their skills.
No teacher prep needed. Teacher directed learning would be best, but this unit is suitable for self-paced or remote learning. The Activity booklet can be printed or viewed digitally. The unit can be completely paperless.
Pre-Requisites: Competent computer and internet skills would be desirable. Good reading skills with ability to follow instructions is required for this unit. The internet is needed for using the online Python Turtle Sandbox, access to digital files and MS PowerPoint is needed for the portfolio and puzzles. There are Google Slides versions of all puzzles and the portfolio for students who use Chromebooks.
