Description

These no-prep math worksheets are a fun way for students to practise simplifying and manipulating radical expressions. Students will use multiplication, division, addition and subtraction of radicals to find equivalent expressions which form a path across the maze.

I especially like to use maze matches as they get students reasoning about a question as they try to find the path. Sometimes they might be able to see quickly why a question won't give the desired answer using good mathematical reasoning, and sometimes they'll just try and work it out. Both excellent mathematical skills!!

Contents- in this pack you will find:

  • 8 different mazes with questions on manipulating radical expressions and finding equivalent expressions. Students will use skills such as simplifying radicals, multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting radical expressions and rationalizing the denominator.
  • Teacher solutions showing the correct path through each maze. This answer key makes for easy, quick assessment.

Suggested Use

These worksheets are versatile and can be used to enhance individual learning or promote teamwork:

  • Individual Activities: Let students navigate through the mazes at their own pace, making it a perfect task for independent work or homework. The differentiated levels means you can target the different needs of your students.
  • Team or Pair Work: Encourage collaboration by having students work in pairs or small groups to solve the mazes together.
  • Relay Races: Add excitement by setting up relays where students solve a step and then pass the worksheet to a teammate, fostering a dynamic classroom environment.

A quick look at the paths students have found in maze will help you get a quick assessment of their learning.

I work as a tutor and I used this with two different students and they really liked it, asked some great questions and made some great connections. It was very helpful and time well spent. In a classroom, I could see how you could have each group do a separate worksheet, present their pathway to the class and then wrap up class with an individual or team race across the maze. That seems like it would be fun. Great teams would realize that one team member could start from the end and try to work their way forward. My only criticism of the worksheet is that the instructions are somewhat hidden to students because they are printed below the maze and students expect instructions to come first, so you might have to explain the goal of the worksheet to them. It's a cool series that Adele has here and once students do one of these worksheets they'll certainly want to do more and won't need the instructions. Two thumbs up from me!! :)

My students thoroughly enjoyed this worksheet. It was just the right amount of difficult to engage them without them getting bored or feel stuck. I loved all the creative ways you were able to write the same radical. Thank you so much!
