Description

This learning activity is a one-page worksheet designed to help students practice converting between radical and rational exponent forms, and simplifying the respective expressions. A detailed answer key with the work shown is included.

Part 1 is a quick check where students need to convert from rational exponents to radical exponents, and then simplify to find a real number answer.

Part 2 is an opportunity for students to practice simplifying radical and rational exponential expressions.

This worksheet was designed for and used in a college algebra class as an "exit ticket" type assignment, where students broke into small groups to spend the last 10-15 minutes of class practicing what was learned.

This worksheet could easily be utilized in a middle or high school algebra course. as an activity, homework, pop quiz, or entrance/exit ticket.

Explain how the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties of integer exponents to those values, allowing for a notation for radicals in terms of rational exponents. For example, we define 5 to the 1/3 power to be the cube root of 5 because we want (5 to the 1/3 power)³ = 5 to the (1/3)(3) power to hold, so (5 to the 1/3 power)³ must equal 5.
Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.
