Real Number System Mini Project - Classifying Real Numbers Venn Diagram

Students work independently on this mini project to show an understanding of classifying real numbers including irrational numbers, rational numbers, integers and whole numbers. This real number system activity gets students thinking at a much higher level than your average Venn diagram of real numbers activity because students must provide their own numbers to be categorized based on given criteria. This visual of the real numbers system is a great way for students to show an understanding of the difference between rational and irrational numbers.

First the students come up with real numbers which fulfill various requirements. Next, the students color the Venn Diagram and finally, the students write their numbers on the Venn Diagram as sprinkles.

General information: For this project, students create a cute ice cream cone Venn Diagram. Each student colors and decorates his/her own ice cream cone and uses numbers written on small pieces of construction paper as the sprinkles. The students write irrational numbers, rational numbers, integers and whole numbers in various forms such as fractions, decimals and whole numbers.

Project Pacing: The project is designed to be completed in one to two forty-five minute periods. However, the project may be introduced during class and completed at home.

Set-up/Materials: Set-up can be very minimal; however, decoration can get fairly crafty if you prefer. To color and decorate the projects, consider providing students with colored pencils, crayons, markers, string, glue and glue sticks.

For the sprinkles, it is recommended to precut many small slips of construction paper or cardstock for students to glue onto the project. Keeping colored paper precut and separated in color coded envelopes helps keep students organized and creates less waste. Allowing students to cut out their own sprinkles is not recommended.

Grading the Assignment: The project can be graded using the checklist provided. First, go through and check to ensure the student has provided a number that meets the requirement. Second, check to ensure the student has placed the number in the correct location on the Venn Diagram. The students should place the number in the innermost circle in which the number can be classified.

Topics covered by this project:

- Categorizing real numbers

- Writing rational numbers as a fraction

- Determining the difference between rational and irrational numbers

Included in this resource:

- Information for the Teacher (instructions/directions/ideas)

- Student Directions

- Project Checklist

- Two Ice Cream Cone Venn Diagram options for students to color

- One sample project

* "Sprinkles" NOT INCLUDED - Well, they are, but it is actually easier to simply cut color paper into small strips with a paper cutter and then cut them into small rectangles varying in size.

Required/Suggested Materials:

- Colored pencils

- Scissors

- Construction paper (cut into small pieces to represent sprinkles)

- Glue Sticks

Loved this resource! I did it last year, but I finally found a version that was structured and came with premade items. The digital version was a huge bonus. My students loved this project and a chance to be creative, I am excited to keep using it

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave meaningful feedback. I appreciate your support! I’m glad you enjoyed how I adapted the activity from “Math Lab” (with permission of course) to make it more like a project. Thanks again for taking time to leave a review.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number.
