Description

PURPOSE:

This worksheet is great for practicing ratios and rates in real world scenarios. All story problems are based on a teacher’s trip to Baltimore where he figures out that each part of his trip from the flight there to the sushi he eats and the sessions he attends have to do with rates and ratios. A full two pages of critical-thinking, word problems and answer key are included.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

This product contains:

✏️ Explanation of how to teach rate/ratio problems

✏️ 2 pages of real world word problems

✏️ An answer key

✏️ An assignable Easel activity

STORY:

I went to a conference during the school year and my students had talked about how unfair it was that I got to travel to Baltimore. They wanted to know more about my trip so I decided to tell the story with good old math problems. They had a good time decoding these problems and then when they found out that it was all real and accurate, they were even more engaged.

POSSIBLE EXTENSIONS:

Dig even deeper into the realm of truly real-world ratios with this in-depth exploration: Real-World Ratios & Unit Conversions | Math Exploration

MATERIALS/PRE-REQS:

Besides this file, you may require:

✏️ Nothing!

I found this worksheet useful however it was not necessary to set up ratios to find the answer. Even after reviewing the answer key I was not satisfied that any ratio should have been set equal to another. The other issue was in the challenge question number10, second part and neglected to give one of the points. After reviewing the answer I saw that the missing point had to be west of Baltimore however I didn't assume Chicago as we had already found that time.

Hi Lori, I'm sorry to hear this particular activity was not to your liking. Using a direct proportion model to solve this type of word problem is just one of many ways to teach this content. You can feel free to use other methods. I have looked back at question 10 and see no issue with the word problem as it clearly asks how long it would take to fly back from Chicago. Thank you for your review.

Understand the concept of a unit rate 𝘢/𝘣 associated with a ratio 𝘢:𝘣 with 𝘣 ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.”
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.
