Description

The following resource corresponds to the Next Generation Science Standard MS-PS4-2. The content level of this activity depends on your students and is accessible for middle school to early high school.

This is a substitute ready lesson, meaning there is limited preparation required. The activity includes bit.ly links to two YouTube Videos published by cognitoedu.org. The videos are linked below for your viewing and evaluation prior to purchase.

Video #1: GCSE Physics - Reflection

This video reviews the concept of reflection. The video reviews what happens to waves when they hit an object. It also covers how to draw simple ray diagrams, such as the angle of incidence, the normal line, and the angle of reflection.

Video #2: GCSE Physics - Refraction of Waves

This video reviews the concept of refraction. In the video, Cognito defines the term refraction, explains why refraction happens, and how to draw/label ray diagrams. The video also reviews the external variables that impacts the movement of waves, as well as, the wave formula.

Note: Cognitoedu.org is an excellent resource for students to study/review content related to math and/or science. They provide videos similar to Crash Course. Even if you do not use this activity, I encourage you look through their platform as my students have greatly benefited from their content.

In this activity (Reflection and Refraction Overview), students will begin by watching one of two videos. This video will introduce students to the concept of reflection. After, students will complete a series of analysis questions and move onto the final video, covering refraction. At the end of the document, students will complete three application drawings where they create a series of ray diagrams. Finally, they will address the variables impacting wave motion. While watching the video(s), students will answer guided questions, create visual aids, and be provided opportunities to draw/annotate their learning. This document serves as an excellent resource to introduce the topic of reflection/refraction or to review the concept(s) prior to examination.

The assignment is independent and student driven, requiring limited preparation from the instructor. The limited preparation also makes it easy for this activity to serve as an independent substitute plan. I have personally used this assignment in the past as a drag and drop substitute plan when teaching MS-PS4-2. To complete this activity, students will need the following...

Materials:

  • Access to A Digital Device (Computer, Table, Phone)
  • Access to YouTube
  • Printed Document (Kinetic Energy Overview)
  • Pen/Pencil

In this purchase, you will receive the student guided "Wave Interactions Overview" document (3 Pages), as well as, a completed answer key (4 Pages). The assignment is in PDF format with bit.ly links for students to directly access the videos without the use of an LMS. This would also serve as an easy to access emergency substitute plan!

This assignment also pairs well with the following assignments from my store:

As always, I am looking to improve my work and I make frequent updates. Please feel free to leave a comment, rating, or questions!
