My students love this set of worksheets for guided rhythm composition projects!
Activity ideas:
-Music centers
-Workstations
-Assessments
-Substitutes
Instructions:
-Give each student four dice to roll for their “rhythm dice composition” activity plus a corresponding worksheet.
-ROLL: Student rolls all four dice and arranges them into any order they like.
-WRITE: Student writes down the 4-beat rhythm pattern into the boxes provided on the worksheet.
-REPEAT: Roll/write again, until all boxes are filled in.
-PERFORM: Student performs the entire 16-beat (4 measure) rhythm pattern by chanting the syllables and using body percussion or small percussion instruments.
Extension ideas:
-Extend the activity to strengthen note reading skills on the recorder. Once students have created their rhythmic compositions, they can transfer those rhythms to the staff and play them for each other.

***Please note: dice-making is NOT required to make this activity work! To save time, you can simply write rhythms onto the wooden blocks using a permanent marker instead.
