Description
This Toothpick Logic Puzzle Lab activity directly supports NGSS Standards MS.ETS.1.1–1.4: Students will apply mathematical reasoning and data analysis to engineer, test, and improve design solutions by identifying problems, evaluating and comparing solutions with quantifiable data, and using models and iterations to refine their designs. The purpose of this 45 minute, 5E investigation is to develop and apply logical reasoning and problem-solving strategies by manipulating models to solve and create toothpick-based puzzles. In this activity, students will use up to 12 toothpicks to solve a series of logic-based puzzles at three levels of difficulty. They will analyze geometric and pattern-based problems and use deductive reasoning to find solutions. After exploring these puzzles, students will apply what they've learned by designing and presenting their own toothpick puzzles for peers to solve, encouraging design thinking, iteration, and logic-based reasoning. This package includes powerpoint resources, a lesson plan, instructor activity guide, students activity guide, response worksheet, answer key, and digital response worksheet. Just print, prep, and it’s ready to go.
