Description

It’s a Volcano Challenge! Build a model that will be tested by creating a lava flow! It’s a great culminating activity to use with your students after a study of landforms, volcanoes, or the US state of Hawai’i. You will love the budget feature and detailed teacher's guide!

What is the challenge?

  • Students will build and test a volcano model.
  • They will be choosing the materials they think they will need and use a budget to "purchase" those items.
  • A 'lava flow' is created with a chemical reaction to test the volcano model.
  • Students will love demonstrating their volcanoes!

What is your prep?

Supplies needed in addition to this package include cardboard tubes – toilet tissue size, small cup or container 1 to 3 ounces, construction paper, masking tape, foil, tissue paper, vinegar, baking soda, measuring spoons, sturdy paper plates, baskets or bins for “shopping carts”, and fake money (optional).

The package specifically contains:

  • Teacher Background
  • 5 pages of Teacher Directions
  • Set of Criteria cards for students in color and black/white
  • Full-page version of criteria for students in color and black/white
  • Student Shopping List
  • Lab Sheet with sample answers
  • 3 pages of Photos
  • Scoring rubric
  • Terms of Use
  • All forms are provided in an editable format! Powerpoint is required to edit.
