Description
This scale drawing project is a rigorous, hands-on activity you can implement to have your students fully grasp the concept of scale factor and scale drawings! It is a group project where each class is split into groups to scale up and reconnect sections of one whole piece. I created this to use with my 7th grade math students and they LOVED it. It is super versatile in that you can bring in art from any time period, and you can easily connect it to other subjects. (I've included multi-disciplinary connection ideas within the resource!) In addition to the scale drawing aspect of the project, there are also instructions for student paragraphs that I used to have them summarize their work.
My favorite part of this project is that it was kind of a mystery since each group was scaling up sections of the same image. It was a fun surprise at the end - I never showed my class the entire original image until all six groups were done and we had put the pieces together!
The prep for this project is minimal. It mostly involves selecting images to be scaled up and cutting sections. It can take less than 30 minutes.
This project is excellent for differentiation. You can choose simple or complex images and differentiate within classes by assigning simple and complex sections to your groups.
This project should take 2-3 days, depending on the age of your students and whether or not they are completing the paragraph.
Included in this resource:
1. Instructions and Project Overview - Includes tips from my experience implementing this!
2. Presentation - Useful for introducing the project to your class!
3. Scale Drawings - Feel free to use these if you don't have a particular drawing in mind for them to scale up! I have also included a blank grid that you can easily overlay with your preferred images.
4. Grading Rubrics and Exemplars - Makes student self-checking and your grading a breeze!
5. Terms of Use and Credits
This resource is for classroom/personal use only. This should not be distributed to anyone besides the license holders. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
