Begin your introduction to coding with Scratch blocks with these unplugged coding activities. Using these 4 activities students will have a hands on opportunity to understand the role of each different coding block. They will learn how to build an algorithm and what each color block means.

These unplugged activities are perfect to introduce teachers into the world of coding without having to turn on a device!

Activity 1: Getting to know Scratch blocks relay

Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify 5 different types of blocks

used in Scratch Coding

Activity 2: Human Robots & Algorithms

Learning Objective: Students will become familiar with making algorithms using Scratch blocks

Included in this resource:

★ 24 large common Scratch blocks

★ 24 small common Scratch blocks (a smaller version of the large ones)

★ 5 TYPE blocks

★ Descriptions explaining what each color block does

★ 2 different activities with teachers notes

Activity 3: Scratch BINGO

Learning Objective: Students will become familiar with the individual

blocks used for Scratch coding.

Included in this resource:

★ 12 x different BINGO cards

★ 18 x Scratch coding blocks

★ 5 TYPE blocks

★ Descriptions explaining what each color block does

Activity 4: Scratch Scavenger Hunt

Learning Objective: Students will become familiar with the

individual blocks used for Scratch coding by looking and searching

for blocks

This resource includes:

★ 10 printable Scratch coding blocks

★ 2 different scavenger hunt cards

★ Teacher notes, including

    • resources needed
    • learning intentions
    • activity details
    • variations of the activity to allow for differentiation within your class

This resource is suitable for teachers with no coding experience. It is an introduction to the types of blocks that are used in Scratch coding.

Target Grades: This resource is best suited to grade 2-4 however it can be adapted as the teacher sees fit.

Please NOTE: Preparing this activity can take some time when printing, cutting and laminating. This activity is designed to be reused many times.

Extremly helpful for incorperating hands on learning of block coding. Great for students who need more explicit instruction in certain areas of the Scratch blocks before they are ready to apply their learning on the computer. Also great to use for coding "human robots" while still using the familiar blocks to "code".
