Description
Take your students on an engaging journey to discover the formation of sedimentary rocks. This lesson has all of the steps, slideshow, notes, practice and a lab. A ready-to-go easy lesson for you to teach your students about Sedimentary rocks and how they are formed.
First: lead students along the path of how a sedimentary rock is formed, and allow them to “draw” pictures along with notes to help them remember the steps. There are so many vocabulary words that go along with sedimentary rocks. Students will draw and learn the meanings of the words involved.
Then, there are 2 digital practice activities…can you make it across the pond by stepping on the correct rocks? This digital activity can be done individually or as a whole class. The first practice activity is a quick review of the vocab words. Students are provided immediate feedback. If they are incorrect they are sent back to try again. The second activity is practicing the steps in order. If students get the order wrong they are sent back to the beginning and retry the whole order again.
This is MORE than just a worksheet, it’s a lesson that will engage your students and help them remember key concepts around sedimentary rocks and many opportunities to assess their knowledge.
Physical Lab also included to help students develop a deeper understanding of the vocabulary involved. You can start with the physical lab or guided journey notes. This will take MORE than 1 day to complete, but your students will have visual models as well as hands-on activities to make them fall in love with the formation of rocks.
Here’s What You’ll Get
- 1-page worksheet of guided “drawing” notes (2 levels of differentiation)
- 8 Google slides that will lead them through the ENTIRE lesson (steps in the formation of sedimentary rocks)
- 5 interactive (self-checking) slides to assess student understanding of the vocabulary
- 7 slide (self-checking) rock hop across the pond to reinforce the order of the steps
- Lab sheet to a physical lab to help reinforce the vocabulary
- Lab directions to lead your students into understanding the journey even better
- teacher answer keys to both guided notes and lab
Key Concepts
Sedimentary rocks begin with the weathering of other rocks. The broken-down sediment then erodes, carrying these pieces away. The sediment is deposited at the mouth of a river/stream creating layers that build up over many years. The build-up of sediment creates compaction and lithification to create sedimentary rocks.
