Description
This Self-Checking chain activity is a low-prep and effective was to reinforce student's understanding of solving exponential equations using common bases. Students will receive immediate feedback on the correctness of their answer by matching a problem card to its correct answer (found at the top of another card).
**How It Works:**
Materials Needed
- Glue or Tape (1 per group of 2 - 4 students
- Scissors (1 per group of 2 - 4 students)
- Activity Sheet copied single sided (1 per group of 2 - 4 students)
Activity Instructions:
For this activity I place students in groups of 2, 3, or 4, depending on how much time I have. For groups of 2, each student will complete 6 problems. For groups of 3, each student will complete 4 problems, and for groups of 4, each student will complete 3 problems.
I like to copy page one in one color and page two in a different color, although to save money, printing on plain copy paper works just as well.
Give each group a set of problem cards and have them cut apart, shuffle, and then distribute evenly among the group members. Students will work the problems on their cards.
*Another way to play is to place all the shuffled cards face down and have each student draw a card to work. As they finish, they set their worked card to the side and draw another card. I encourage students to depend on the members of their group and their personal notes if they need help. I try to be as unhelpful as possible during this activity.
After the students are finished, they work together to place the cards in a continuous chain by finding the answer to their card at the top of someone elseโs card.
If all the problems are worked correctly, the answer to the last problem should be at the top of the first card.
Glue or tape the chain together and have all member sign their name on the back of the chain.
These make great room decorations when you print them in color!
