If your students need help generating a sentence for main idea, these editable worksheets will be a lifesaver! Writing an effective sentence with a main idea is an important skill for students to learn. With these worksheets, you can help your students learn how to write a main idea sentence in a fun and interesting way.

This resource contains links to edit and personalize 6 main idea worksheets in Canva. Canva is a drag and drop online tool that helps you create worksheets in minutes for your students with no design experience or special software required. Just click on the link in the PDF to open in Canva, click “Customize this Template”, and you’re ready to go! Print out the worksheet, as is, or change the text and images to suit your needs.

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

There are 6 worksheets for speech therapy included in this resource:

  1. Soccer Wh- picture scene: This soccer themed picture scene will help your students to understand what is going on in the picture with the probing questions. Then, they will be able to identify the main idea with the information they gathered.
  2. Actor wh- picture scene: Your students will have to use their inferencing skills to understand what the picture is about. Several wh- questions are included to help them organize their thoughts. Then, they use this information to create a sentence for main idea and supporting details.
  3. Main Idea Generator: Pair this speech therapy worksheet with your favorite story or book! The students will answer the included questions about the story to generate the main idea.
  4. Main Idea Tool: This handy visual aid will help your students visualize how to find the main idea. The visual includes a picture of a table and explains how the main idea is the table top and the supporting details are the legs.
  5. Sentence with Main Idea: Another great worksheet to help your students understand how to generate the main idea. There is a picture in the middle of the worksheet and the students need to answer wh- questions related to the picture. Then they can create the main idea based on their answers!
  6. Worksheet for Main Idea: A great reader is always on the lookout for the main idea! This handy checklist will guide your students during the pre-reading, reading, and post-reading stage with essential questions that will help come up with the main idea.
