Description

This resource will help you kids to slow down and really interact with Shakespeare's language. I use this early in my sophomore Macbeth unit, and it works wonderfully. The students all said it REALLY helped! Most examples on the worksheet are from Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, but you could make this work with just about any Shakespearean text. The activity probably takes about 10-15 minutes, but I usually assign it for homework. This activity also works well with kids that know ZERO grammar.

Resources Included:

  • Inverted syntax worksheet with explanation and practice
  • Inverted syntax worksheet key
  • 5-question inverted syntax quiz
  • 5-question quiz answer key
  • Common Core alignment

Updated December 2022: This product is now editable! It will download as both a PDF and Word doc.

Enjoy!

My students really enjoyed this activity. It helped them better understand Romeo and Juliet and challenged them beyond their everyday assignments. Awesome resource!

I added this to the notes I already had on Shakespeare's language, and it made it much more understandable than what I included previously. I only used the examples from Romeo and Juliet since that was the play we were reading.
