Description

Whether it’s making a Rube Goldberg machine, or making work easier: the topic of simple machines always catches the interest of students. These Simple Machine Fluency passages include easy explanations with vocabulary defined in the text.

I have used science-based fluency passages with students in grades 3-8 and have found them especially useful with middle school resource students (special education).

Please see the preview for highlights from the Simple Machines Fluency Bundle and ways to incorporate multisensory instruction with fluency.

This passage includes

· Full color version for phrasing

· Print friendly

· Comprehension page

· Answer page

· Helper Hint page – how parents can use it at home and differentiate to support struggling readers or challenge high readers.

· Graphs for students to show their growth.

Each passage encourages growth by:

· using content vocabulary with a definition in the text

· breaking the text into manageable pieces for lower readers

· adding a simple picture to make it more accessible

· integrating review of learned topics into fluency lessons

· comprehension questions ranging from ‘right there’ to higher order questions

· parent/adult support

· 130-195 words per passage

Ways I’ve used them:

1. Fluency pairs – partners practice together

2. Centers – laminate and use dry erase markers

3. Homework – 4 parts for 4 days

4. Close read (without a timer) – using colors suggested to annotate

5. Resource classroom – Many resources for older kids have less pictures. My resource students and language learners still need them. Having 8 passages allows reluctant readers to choose from two topics. Please see the preview for more multisensory techniques.

The Simple Machines Fluency Bundle includes these passages: (click on the link)
