Although this is a simple assignment it is open enough to give your students space to be creative while still allowing you a rubric to mark their work. I have had students make 3D models, slideshows, posters and write stories.
I have used this assignment every year with my Science 9 class and it is a big hit.
Two pages are used for the student - a brainstorm area, planning area and information on websites they can use to gather information. The third page is an extensive rubric that includes the main knowledge objective as well as research skills, communication skills and use of scientific language. The rubric is based off of outcomes from the Alberta Programs of Study for Science 9 but can be used anywhere.
