Created by a STEM specialist and tested with students, this winter STEM Challenge is the perfect way to bring snow into your classroom—no coats required! Students will enjoy designing and building their own unique snowflakes. Add to this experience with a picture book of your choice or use the included informational page to dive into the science of snowflakes. This engaging and easy-prep activity is ideal for celebrating the season with STEM!
What is the challenge?
- Students build a model of a snowflake using various supplies.
- They must work to make the shape symmetrical, beautiful, and detailed.
- You can opt to require that the final product be a stand-alone model so the models can be displayed.
- Another option is to use a budget and purchase the materials needed.
What is your prep?
You will also need supplies for this package. These include white pipe cleaners, cotton swabs, craft sticks, toothpicks, decorative items, white glue, and calculators. Of course, you can substitute with any materials you already have on hand. Suggestions for materials are included in the resource.
The package specifically includes:
- Cover, teacher background
- Materials and preparation page
- 9 pages of teacher directions
- Constraints pages in 3 versions
- 4 pages of photographs
- Lab sheet
- Cost planning sheet for students (in 2 versions)
