Description

The Crazy Snowman Genetics Lab is an activity used to reinforce genetics vocab and the inheritance of traits. With simple coin tosses students discover how dominant and recessive traits work and get translated into crazy snowman phenotypes. Students will gain a deeper understanding of Punnett Squares, alleles, phenotypes, genotypes, traits, and more.

This was one of my first labs I ever created, and I've found that this lab has just the right combination of engagement, challenge, and fun. The snowmen come out completely ridiculous and my students can't believe the results.

This is intended for any 6th - 8th grade students who are studying DNA and genetics.

Included:

  • teacher instructions
  • Student lab copy
  • Student reflection and vocabulary practice
  • Answer key
  • Bonus: Genetics Guided Cornell Notes & Answer key!

*Note: This activity is also part of my DNA Unit MEGA Bundle! If you are looking for more activities to support your DNA Unit, check this out. It has labs, PowerPoints, review activities, Punnett Square practice, guided notes, InterActive Notebook study tools, and much more. See the links below for more details on everything included:

NGSSMS-LS3-2
Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
