" Solve Absolute Value Equations Relay Activity - Algebra 1 - Digital - Distance Learning "

DIGITAL AND PRINT: Six rounds include practice solving absolute value equations.

Separate students into groups of four and give each student their own copy of Round 1. Students should discuss the problem as they work on it and agree on the correct answer. Once each student in the group has the correct answer, ONE person from the group takes ONE Round 1 sheet to have it checked by the teacher.

If the answer is correct, the student then picks up four copies of Round 2 for the group. If the answer is not correct, the teacher sends the student back so the group can correct Round 1.

Groups continue working until each round is completed and checked by the teacher for accuracy.

This activity works well early in a lesson when students are actively learning a new skill. The discussion and collaboration in the small groups enhance the students’ learning.

The answer key for the teacher is included.

I used this resource as a mastery check with my students, instead of a relay. I gave the first 3 problems on one worksheet, my students would solve the equations and show me their answers. I would help them understand what happened when they would not get the correct answers, have them retry those problems and I would recheck their work. Once they got all three problems correct, I gave my students the last 3 problems, again, guiding them, if needed. My students stayed on task and really worked hard to get the correct answers! I really like this resource, and I just do not have the time to create them, so thank you!

The students LOVED solving the equations while doing the relay race, it gave them a challenge and a motive to solve and find the answers - awesome activity to break up the monotony of typical worksheets!!
